Representing the Dynamic Response of Vegetation to Nitrogen Limitation via Biological Nitrogen Fixation in the CLASSIC Land Model

چکیده

Despite its pivotal feedback to carbon cycling, representing the dynamic response of vegetation nitrogen limitation is a key challenge for simulating terrestrial sink with land models. Here, we explore representation this novel biological fixation and cycling in Canadian Land Surface Scheme Including Biogeochemical Cycles. First, assess how incorporating via influences CO2 fertilization experiments, comparing simulations against observation-based estimates from meta-analyses. This evaluates whether underlying mechanisms are realistically represented. Second, affects simulated sequestration over 20th early 21st century, examining effects global change drivers (CO2, deposition, climate, land-use change) acting both individually concurrently. reduces driven by elevated historical period. Representing increases estimate present-day 0.2 Pg C yr?1 (because intensifies limitation, which drives upregulation fixation, alleviating limitation). Our results highlight importance projecting future under

The Thermochemistry of Biological Nitrogen Fixation

Using standard thermodynamic data it is shown that the oxidation of glucose by nitrogen to give carbon dioxide and ammonia is an overall reaction that involves a substantial evolution of heat and decrease in free energy. This is not in accordance with literature statements that biological nitrogen fixation is endothermic. In the concluding section a Frost diagram is used to survey the thermodyn...

Mechanism of Biological Nitrogen Fixation

Recently Phelps and Wilson (1) reported the occurrence of hydrogenase, the enzyme which activates molecular hydrogen, in nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Because HZ specifically inhibits nitrogen fixation by red clover plants inoculated with Rhizobium trijolii as well as by Azotobacter (2,3), possession of hydrogenase by these organisms may be more than merely fortuitous. The possibility must be consi...

Assessment Maize Hybrids Response to Biological and Chemical Nitrogen Fertilizers

This research set out to evaluate the effect of combined biological and chemical nitrogen fertilizers on some corn hybrids. To this end an experiment was conducted as split plot on the basis of randomized complete block design with four replications. Main plots were included: use of chemical and biological fertilizers in four levels: 100% chemical fertilizer, 75% chemical fertilizer + 100% bio-...

Biological nitrogen fixation, 1924-1974.

Crop rotation was practiced in ancient times by alternating the use of leguminous and nonleguminous plants. The basis for the benefit derived from this practice was not understood, but it was observed empirically that crops were improved and the condition of the soil was maintained better with rotation than by continual cropping with nonleguminous plants. Rotation was recognized as good husband...

“Biological Nitrogen Fixation” Book Summary

Biological nitrogen fixation is a very valuable alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. This process will be discussed in the “Biological Nitrogen Fixation” book. A wide array of free-living and associative nitrogen fixing organisms (diazotrophs) will be covered. The most extensively studied and applied example of biological nitrogen fixation is the symbiotic interaction between nitrogen fixing “rh...
